The City

Sanlúcar de Barrameda is situated the Cádiz province, in the autonomous community of Andalucía, at the mouth of the Guadalquivir River. The seaside town is home of the oldest horse races in Spain and it is a paradise for those who love to eat and drink snacks. One of the better opportunities to get in touch with the ambiance of the town is the Sanlúcar Tapas Fair, a competition of the local gastronomy. The speciality tipple here is a distinctive manzanilla wine, dry and slightly salty. The town is equally famed for its excellent seafood, for which manzanilla is the ideal accompaniment. From an ambiental point of view, Sanlúcar is very interesting and his nature is also protected by a naturlapark. The climate is mediterranean with warm temperature even during the winter.
This city is filled with numerous interesting historical reminiscences, such as the castle of Santiago, from the 15th century; the palace of the Infantes of Orleans and Borbón, present site of the City Hall; the church of Nuestra Señora de la O; the palace of the dukes of Sidonia, which at present houses the municipal archives, and the convent of Santo Domingo. Starting from the 16th century the town developed as a trade area, with a particular architecture combining historical buildings (monastery, churches, etc) with moderns ones. The population of Sanlucar is 63.187, with more the 50% is less than 25 years old, that’s make it one of the youngest town in Spain.

City review

Pros:

One of Spain's three best known sherry-producing towns.
Home of the oldest horse races in Spain.
Paradise for those who love to eat and drink snacks, especially during the Sanlúcar Tapas Fair, a competition of the local gastronomy.
A city with a beach resort.

Cons:

The Spanish in Sanlúcar differs from the Castilian Spanish. The Andalusian dialect of European Spanish is spoken in Andalusia, which might be harder to understund for a foreigner, or for a student of Spanish language.
