Bilbao is a welcoming city which has everything on its doorstep: museums, art galleries, its theatre, the old town, its historic buildings, festivals and nightlife attractive. In addition, Bilbao is in a privileged location, because you can enjoy both the mountains and the sea and the picturesque villages.

The city

Bilbao is the heart of a metropolis with a population of more than a million people. It is the driving force of social and economic development and it is the main factor behind the modernization of the Gulf of Biscay. Ambitious architectural, and general infrastructure projects, have fueled the urban and financial regeneration of the city. The Guggenheim Museum; the Euskalduna Concert Hall and Convention Center; the underground, built by Norman Foster; the airport, built by Calatrava; the new tram and projects by architects such as Arata Isozaki and Cesar Pelli are all examples of the overwhelming vitality that passes through Bilbao. Situated in the Territory of Bizkaia, the city is surrounded by fertile landscapes, with forests, mountains, beaches, and steep coasts, that make Bilbao an excellent destination for any traveller. The modern network of transport and roads makes the nearby Basque capitals like Vitoria and San Sebastian much more accessible.

How to get to Bilbao

The international airport is located in Bilbao Loiu, 10 km from the city. Our school offers a welcome service for students at the airport. Contact us to request this service. There is a bus that goes straight from the airport to the Plaza Moyua in the city center (which is by the Moyua metro station). This is the yellow bus service Bizkaibus (line number 3247). The bus stop is just outside the arrivals terminal.

You can also take a taxi to the airport. A green light on the car indicates that the taxi is available.

Public transport and Creditrans cards

Bilbao has a modern public transport system that consists of trams, buses and the metro. The Creditrans card can be used on each of these 3 modes of transport, and it makes travel cheaper. You can buy a card for 5, 10 or 15 euros - whatever suits you. Creditrans cards can be bought at the metro stations and tram stops. Furthermore, there is a machine at FEVE station. Simply touch the screen where 'Creditrans' appears and choose your card. You can pay with either a ticket or money.

  • Metro: you need your Creditrans card to enter the metro, and to calculate the price of your journey (depending on the number of stations).
  • Tram: There is a flat rate for travel by tram. Do not forget to validate your Creditrans card in the machine before you travel.
  • Bus (Bilbobus (red) and Bizkaibus (yellow)): City buses (Bilbobus red) also have a fixed rate.
